Gemini VII Technical Debriefing and the Booster Station-Keeping Sightings (1965)
This is the preliminary technical debriefing transcript of the Gemini VII flight crew, Frank Borman and James Lovell, made from voice tape recordings of sessions conducted December 19 through 21, 1965 at the Crew Quarters, Cape Kennedy, Florida (p. preface). It is a 222 page operational and systems debriefing covering countdown through recovery; its only material relevant to unidentified objects is in the "Visual Sightings" section, where the crew describes tracking their own Titan booster, a flashing light, particles, the Gemini 6 rendezvous target, two satellites, and a Minuteman reentry.
Key excerpts
“As I mentioned earlier, about this time we were in close proximity to the booster, and we started flying through some particles, but I was not sure exactly what it was, so I told him to stop thrusting as we approached this. (p. 73)”
“The booster venting that was still occurring suddenly lit up, became lit up. It looked like we were flying through a lot of foreign objects or debris. I was afraid that we were going to hit something. (p. 23)”
“As for man-made objects sighted, we took sightings of the booster. We had no difficulty in sighting the booster at turnaround and in station keeping with it. We maintained the flashing light in sight throughout the first orbit. (p. 133)”
“Borman: GOT A BOGEY AT 10 O'CLOCK HIGH. [...] Control: Gemini 7, is that the booster or is that an actual sighting? Borman: WE HAVE SEVERAL ... ACTUAL SIGHTINGS. [...] Borman: WE ALSO HAVE THE BOOSTER IN SIGHT ... (USG-UAP-D001, enclosed Oberg article)”
Alternative hypotheses
The objects were the crew's own Titan booster and its venting debris
most probable, and the documented explanation).
The "man-made objects" were correctly identified known hardware
An object remained genuinely unidentified
least probable on this record).
